125km Benin-Asaba Highway Construction Begins with 30-Month Deadline

President Bola Tinubu officially launched the construction of the 125km Benin-Asaba highway on March 24, 2025, with an expected completion timeline of 30 months. The flag-off event was attended by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, who emphasized the project as a legacy initiative for the state.

Governor Okpebholo highlighted the significance of the highway, stating that it would enhance infrastructural development in Edo, bringing it in line with states like Lagos. He expressed gratitude for President Tinubu’s attention to the welfare of Edo residents and noted the importance of good roads in boosting the state’s economy.

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, praised the leadership of Governor Okpebholo, noting that he has turned Edo into a hub of construction in under 150 days. Umahi acknowledged the President’s commitment to the state, citing multiple visits for project evaluations.

Minister of Finance Wale Edun assured attendees that funding for the project is secure, promising a successful and timely completion. Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, who was represented by Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, expressed appreciation for the project and requested its extension to Onitsha Bridge, emphasizing its importance for connecting Nigeria’s Eastern and Western regions.

This highway project is expected to significantly improve transportation and economic activities, thereby enhancing the standard of living for the communities it serves.
