A land ownership tussle between the Opolo and Okutukutu villages in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, has resulted in the deaths of two people.
Some Opolo natives said that the conflict over the boundary of their community’s property came about as a result of development drawn to the region by the state capital of Yenagoa’s population boom.
Kester Wilcox, the youth president of the Okutukutu community, told Daily Trust that after Opolo teenagers assaulted Okutukutu and damaged property largely owned by non-indigenes, the community mobilised and took revenge.
He called on the opposing factions to accept peace.
Men from the tactical team of the command have been sent to the combat zones in an effort to restore order, according to ASP Musa Muhammad, the police spokesman for Bayelsa State, who verified the issue.
The land dispute and the number of casualties from the violent attack were verified by the Bayelsa State administration.
In a statement released on Monday by his media assistant, Mr. Doubara Atasi, the deputy governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, criticised the attack and instructed the appropriate security authorities to track down and prosecute those responsible.
