An 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Russia on July 30, 2025, prompting tsunami warnings for several countries across the Pacific, including the US West Coast. Parts of the Aleutian Islands and Hawaii remain under advisory.

Tsunami warnings for the US coastline have been downgraded to advisories, although caution is still advised in affected areas as wave activity persists. Nearly 2 million people were evacuated in Japan as the first waves hit, and evacuations also occurred in parts of the US, including Crescent City, California, which saw peak tsunami waves of about 8 feet.

The Kremlin reported no casualties from the earthquake or resulting tsunamis, attributing this to effective tsunami warning systems. Officials continue to monitor conditions, warning that unusual wave activity may persist for hours. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay away from beaches and remain vigilant.

Tsunami warnings are still in effect for Northern California, with advisories affecting parts of Alaska, Oregon, and Washington. Countries like Chile and Ecuador have issued their own warnings and advisories, with evacuation measures in place for coastal communities.

As emergency services remain on standby, officials urge residents to heed warnings and avoid coastal areas until the threat fully subsides.
