Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that the proposed Lagos Tenancy Bill aims to balance the interests of landlords and tenants while addressing housing disputes. This bill is currently under consideration by the State House of Assembly.

During the inauguration of the Sunny Ajose Housing Estate in Ajara, Badagry, Sanwo-Olu stated that the bill is designed to create a fair and transparent rental system. He emphasized the need for a collaborative relationship between landlords and tenants, ensuring that both parties can thrive.

“Everybody wants to be a landlord. But you must also have tenants who can survive and pay rent,” he said, highlighting that the new law seeks to streamline tenancy agreements and prevent exploitation through unfair charges or evictions.

Sanwo-Olu also mentioned the government’s ongoing housing policies, including rent-to-own and rent-to-live schemes, which are aimed at facilitating home ownership for residents. He assured that these initiatives would be strengthened under the new legal framework.

The governor reiterated the commitment to making housing affordable and sustainable for all Lagos residents, stating, “The tenancy bill is a continuation of that partnership, a system where the government, landlords, and tenants all win.”
