In a landmark initiative aimed at empowering vulnerable women, the Federal Government has handed over 100 energy-efficient, two-bedroom homes to widows in Rigachikun, Kaduna State. The project, executed under the Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL) Social Housing Programme, is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda designed to promote inclusive growth and sustainable development.
According to a statement released by the Presidency on Wednesday, the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to restoring dignity and providing shelter for disadvantaged citizens.
“These homes represent far more than physical structures. They symbolise renewed hope and restored dignity, particularly for the 100 resilient women empowered through this initiative,” said Demola Adebise, Chairman of Family Homes Funds Limited.
He described the project as a new model for social housing delivery in Nigeria — one that integrates home ownership, skills training, livelihood support, and climate-smart construction.
A Story of Partnership and Empowerment
Unlike traditional housing projects, this one began when a group of widows pooled their land and reached out to the Federal Government through the FHFL. Their collaboration led to the construction of 100 affordable homes, combining access to shelter with opportunities for self-reliance through training and cottage farming.
Each home was constructed using the Expanded Polystyrene System — an innovative technology that reduces building costs and carbon emissions by up to 40%. The houses are equipped with solar power systems, while each beneficiary received training in livelihood skills and access to small yards for urban farming and food processing to boost income and food security.
Managing Director of FHFL, Abdulmuttalib Mukhtar, praised the widows’ courage and initiative, saying the project proves that meaningful change happens when citizens take the first step and government provides the right support.
A Model for Inclusive Development
Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, commended the initiative, noting that it aligns perfectly with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Through projects like this, we ensure that government spending translates into tangible outcomes — roofs over heads, jobs for our women and youth, and dignity for our people,” he said.
Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, also hailed the project as a model of people-centred governance, highlighting its role in promoting inclusivity and innovation.
“Our administration is proud to host this first-of-its-kind energy-efficient social housing project for widows. It reflects Kaduna State’s commitment to inclusive growth and innovation,” he said.
Building Hope, Creating Jobs
The project, implemented in partnership with the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure and the Kaduna State Government, created over 500 jobs during construction and provided sustainable housing for 100 families.
It stands as a clear example of how collaboration between citizens and government can transform lives — turning policy into progress, and progress into opportunity.
Earlier, the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development had approved uniform prices for housing units under the Renewed Hope Estate Programme — ₦8.5 million for one-bedroom, ₦11.5 million for two-bedroom, and ₦12.5 million for three-bedroom semi-detached bungalows — in an effort to promote affordability and fairness for Nigerians nationwide.
This project not only provides homes but also hope — a model for inclusive, climate-smart development that can be replicated across Nigeria.
