The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), has initiated the demolition of illegal structures in the Ikate Elegushi area as part of its efforts to remove buildings erected without proper approval or authorization.

This enforcement operation, conducted in collaboration with the Lagos State House of Assembly and the Office of Urban Development, targeted structures that violated building regulations, encroached on drainage setbacks, exceeded permissible water levels, and posed risks to public safety.

Sylvester Ogunkelu, Chairman of the House Committee on Physical Development, expressed strong support for the ongoing drive to sanitize Lagos’ built environment, highlighting the critical importance of compliance with building regulations in a densely populated state like Lagos.

Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, noted that illegal construction continues to challenge environmental sustainability and urban planning efforts in the state. He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that all building developments meet required standards.

Bldr. Gbaye Florence, Acting General Manager of LASBCA, stated that the agency is determined to intensify monitoring across all zones. She explained that many structures targeted for demolition had previously received multiple notices, including stop-work and demolition orders, but owners failed to comply.

The enforcement team is now extending its operations to the Lekki–Ikoyi axis, where additional illegal structures have been identified, including those erected directly under high-tension power lines, which pose significant danger to public safety.

Officials have warned property owners that the government will no longer tolerate hazardous developments and emphasized that they must adhere to statutory building procedures. Hon. Ogunkelu confirmed that the House of Assembly will continue to support enforcement agencies to ensure compliance and maintain order in physical development.

The Lagos State Government has urged developers, landlords, and prospective property owners to seek proper approvals before starting any construction, underscoring that ignorance of the law will not be accepted as an excuse.
