The Abia State Government has announced a decision to remove any billboard or outdoor advertising structure that poses risks to public safety. This commitment was articulated in a statement from Mrs. Victoria Onwubiko, Managing Director/CEO of the Abia Structures Signage and Advertisement Agency (ABSSAA), issued on Tuesday.
The government has completed an integrity test of high-rise billboards and outdoor advertising structures, current findings will soon be reviewed with their owners. This initiative aims to enhance environmental safety and prevent future billboard collapses, especially following a recent tragedy in Aba where a billboard collapsed, tragically resulting in the death of a tricycle driver and injuring others.
The integrity tests focused on various safety aspects, including structural integrity, material durability, stability, and overall installation quality. Following the assessments, ABSSAA will engage billboard owners to discuss findings, recommend necessary reinforcements, and confirm ownership and installation responsibilities.
The statement emphasized that public safety is non-negotiable; any billboard found to be unsafe or poorly constructed will face immediate remedial actions or demolition. This proactive approach aligns with international outdoor media safety standards.
The government called for full cooperation from billboard owners and advertising companies, emphasizing that compliance with safety regulations is mandatory to continue operations within the state. The Abia State Government remains committed to promoting outdoor advertising that not only enhances business visibility and urban aesthetics but also prioritizes the safety and well-being of its citizens.
