A coalition of legal experts, human rights advocates, and close associates of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) gathered on Friday, April 25, 2025, to demand the immediate demolition of a four-storey hotel built adjacent to his residence in Ikeja GRA, Lagos. This protest coincided with the recent observance of Fawehinmi’s posthumous 87th birthday on April 22.
The coalition, comprising notable figures such as Femi Falana, SAN, and other prominent human rights lawyers, expressed deep concern over the hotel’s construction, labeling it illegal and a significant threat to the safety and privacy of Fawehinmi’s family. They argue that the building violates Lagos State’s urban planning laws, particularly the requirement for a minimum three-metre setback from property boundaries.
“This gathering is a call for justice for Chief Gani Fawehinmi and his family,” the coalition stated. They emphasized that the hotel, while referred to as a “so-called apartment,” was constructed with blatant disregard for regulations, endangering the legacy of a man who fought tirelessly for justice and human rights.
Fawehinmi, who passed away in 2009, is remembered for his relentless advocacy against injustice, often facing persecution under military regimes. The activists asserted that erecting a structure so close to his home is an affront to his memory and sacrifices.
The coalition raised serious security concerns, noting that the hotel’s proximity poses risks of surveillance and potential criminal access to Fawehinmi’s household. They highlighted alarming incidents where a water tank from the hotel collapsed into Fawehinmi’s compound, underscoring the immediate danger posed by the building.
“We are fortunate that no one has been hurt so far,” they warned, stressing the need for urgent action before a tragedy occurs. Their demands include the demolition of the hotel, an investigation into possible collusion between the developers and municipal officials, and enhanced security measures for the Fawehinmi family.
“This is not merely about a building; it is about preserving a legacy and ensuring justice for a man who dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of others. This injustice must not stand,” the coalition concluded, vowing to continue their fight until their demands are met.
