Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has urged all levels of government in Nigeria to adopt a proactive approach to disaster management following the recent flood disaster in Yola, Adamawa State.
In a statement, Obi expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries caused by the flooding, emphasizing the need for significant investment in disaster preparedness and infrastructure. He stated, “This tragedy is a painful reminder of the urgent need for serious investment in disaster preparedness, environmental protection, and urban infrastructure.”
Obi praised the prompt response of the Adamawa State Government and relevant agencies involved in rescue efforts but stressed that disasters should not be treated as fleeting headlines. He called for effective drainage infrastructure to protect communities and preserve livelihoods.
He also urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other authorities to swiftly provide relief materials and long-term support to those affected. “I stand in solidarity with the affected communities in Adamawa State,” he said, extending condolences to the bereaved and wishing a quick recovery for the injured.
Obi concluded by calling for immediate action to support victims and prevent future disasters.
