Confab to tackle substandard materials, unethical practices, quackery

Worried by the unethical practices and the use of substandard construction materials, the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) is to host an international conference on construction practices in Nigeria.
The Acting Director General, NBRRI, Pof. Samson Duna while briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday noted that the conference is aimed at proffering solutions to contemporary issues in the construction industry towards an improved local content and competitive edge in line with global best practices.
Duna said, “The construction industry is greatly influenced by multi-dimensional issues which include: policies, ethics and standards of practice, infrastructure collapse, procurement processes, project financing issues, research and development, maintenance practices and culture in construction industry.
He said construction practices in Nigeria are robust but saddled with a lot of issues such as use of substandard construction materials, quackery in the profession, unethical practices, poor maintenance culture and urban and regional issues.
The three-day conference which is slated for 2nd to 4th July 2019 is to hold at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja.
It has the theme, Construction Practices in Nigeria: Issues, Prospects and Solutions.
Sub-themes include: Policies, ethics and standard practice in construction industry, construction industry development, infrastructure collapse and unethical practices in the industry, procurement processes and challenges in the construction industry.
Other sub-themes include: Project financing issues, challenges and options in construction, maintenance practices and culture in construction industry, urban and regional issues in construction, standards, specifications and quality assurance in construction among others.
