A newly constructed Faculty of Social Sciences block, Benue State University, yesterday collapsed. Our correspondent, who was the scene of the collapsed building, observed that various items, including computers and other vital documents were destroyed as the building was reduced to rubble.

The incident occurred while students and staff of the university were on strike in sympathy with ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) industrial dispute.

The real reason for the collapse of the building, which is one of the Tertiary Education Trust fund (TETfund) projects, could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report, but many linked it to substandard work.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Tser Vanger, confirmed the incident. He said the building collapsed between 8.30a.m. and 9a.m. while people were preparing to go for the early morning church service.

Thousands of people were trooping into the university to catch a glimpse of the collapsed building. New Telegraph
