The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed the recovery of three bodies from the rubble of a collapsed building in the Ikorodu area, following a tragic incident that occurred on Tuesday.
According to LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency received distress calls around 2:02 PM, prompting an immediate activation of the State’s Emergency Response Plans. Emergency response teams arrived at the site by 2:40 PM and discovered that a two-storey building under construction had collapsed, trapping several individuals beneath the debris.
In addition to the fatalities, nine adult males were successfully rescued and treated by LASEMA’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit, highlighting the urgent and effective response of the agency.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu stated, “Search and rescue operations are still ongoing. All recovered bodies have been handed over to the Igbogbo Police Station for further investigation.” He noted that the cause of the collapse is yet to be determined and emphasized the need for thorough investigations.
Safety measures have been implemented at the site, with the operational area cordoned off to prevent further incidents. The agency is currently working to ensure that all necessary protocols are followed to avoid a repeat of such tragedies in the future.
The Lagos State government has faced increasing scrutiny over building safety regulations, particularly in areas undergoing rapid development. This incident has reignited concerns regarding compliance with construction standards and the enforcement of safety measures in the state.
Residents of Ikorodu expressed their grief and concern over the incident, calling for stricter enforcement of building codes to prevent future occurrences. The community is also rallying to support the families affected by this tragedy.
As investigations continue, LASEMA has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious building activities to the relevant authorities. The agency reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents in Lagos State.
