The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace and Good Governance has called on the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) to promptly pay outstanding amounts owed to contractors involved in the Bwari Housing Project. In a statement issued by National Coordinator Comrade Isa Yakubu, the coalition expressed concern that payment delays are hindering progress on this essential housing initiative.
The project, awarded to various contractors in April 2022, faced delays due to site readiness issues, resulting in increased material and labor costs. Despite these challenges, contractors remained committed to completing the project within the specified timeline.
Since the new management team took over at the FHA in February 2024, there have been claims of non-payment despite the completion of some buildings. Contractors have reportedly taken out loans for project financing, exacerbating their financial difficulties due to the FHA’s inaction.
The coalition highlighted that many contractors have abandoned the site due to the lack of payments, turning the project into an abandoned site, which was initially intended to provide affordable housing. They have made multiple requests for meetings with the FHA’s management to address these issues, but have received no response.
The statement criticized the FHA for advertising new projects while existing ones remain incomplete, suggesting mismanagement of taxpayer funds. The coalition is urging immediate action to settle the debts and revive the Bwari Housing Project.
