The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has been tasked by the Minister of State for the Environment, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, with finding solutions to the continent’s climate change problems. Salako stated that relocation was already occurring in many of the countries, stating, “It is a fact that the population of climate migrants and environmentally displaced people are rising in our sub-region.” He made this observation on Monday at the ECOWAS Coordination Meeting on 30 by 30 in Abuja.

He said, “As I reflect on the importance of the successful implementation of 30by30, I see that the stakes are high for ECOWAS countries and for Africa being the continent most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.”

He acknowledged that the ECOWAS region may have the lowest GDP in the world, but he also pointed out that it was one of the most biodiverse areas on Earth and had strong representation in the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, which all ECOWAS member states joined to push for a commitment to increase the area under protection to at least 30% of the planet by 2030.

He added that a significant mandate had been placed on them to create a regional 30by30 implementation plan that aimed to ensure the effective protection of at least 30% of the ECOWAS region in order to maintain its life-giving ecosystems and to immediately stop the extinction of wild species caused by humans.
