Abuja– February 4, 2024 – Viewpoint Housing News.

Nigerian construction workers have announced a three-day warning strike beginning on February 5 in response to employers’ failure to enforce the pay of wage awards.

The workers, represented by the National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture, and Wood Workers (NUCECFWW) and the Construction and Civil Engineering Senior Staff Association (CCESSA), declared the ultimatum in a joint statement on Friday.

According to the statement, which was signed by Ibrahim Walama, general secretary of the NUCECFWW, and Tony Egbule, acting general secretary of the CCESSA, the decision to go on strike was made during the joint National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of both groups on January 25.

To alleviate the suffering caused by the elimination of petrol subsidies, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had authorized a six-month interim salary hike of N35,000 for all treasury-paid staff.
According to the groups, their employers refused to discuss the execution of the wage agreement reached between the federal government and organised labour.

The statement goes on to say, “The joint NEC of both unions has directed all the members of the NUCECFWW and CCESSA to proceed on a three-day warning strike, starting from February 5, 2024, in the first instance, to press home our demand.”

“Consequent upon the above, all the members across board are advised to ensure total compliance.”

The organisations also advised officials and members of both unions to “constantly check the relevant platforms of NUCECFWW and CCESSA for necessary information and further directives.”
