In a recent incident that has sparked outrage, two mosques in Aramoko, Ekiti State, were demolished, prompting condemnation from the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC). The demolitions were linked to a constituency project led by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, raising serious concerns about religious intolerance.

The first mosque was reportedly demolished without any explanation, while the second was taken down to make room for a market associated with Bamidele’s project. MURIC has criticized the Senate Leader for what they perceive as an assault on the Muslim community in Ekiti State.

In a statement released on April 7, 2025, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director of MURIC, expressed deep disappointment in the actions of local authorities, including Oba Adegoke Olu-Adeyemi, the Alara of Aramoko, and various government officials involved in the demolitions. He emphasized that the short notice given to the Muslim community to vacate the mosque was unjust and indicative of a broader trend of hostility toward Yoruba Muslims.

MURIC described the demolition of the Sabo Central Mosque as a clear act of religious intolerance and a violation of the community’s rights. The organization urged Bamidele to engage with the local Muslim community and consider rebuilding the mosque to mend relations and restore trust.

The statement highlighted the deep emotional impact of the demolitions on the Muslim community, which views mosques as essential spiritual sanctuaries. MURIC warned that such actions could be perceived as a declaration of war against their faith, calling on Bamidele to reconsider his stance.

The group concluded with a plea for calm among Muslims in the region, reminding them that Islam is a religion of peace and encouraging them to represent their faith positively in the face of adversity.
