The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has declared the country’s current housing deficit, estimated at over 20 million units, a national emergency requiring immediate action from both federal and state governments.

During a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday to mark its 35th anniversary, CORBON Chairman Dr. Samson Opaluwah emphasized the vital role the building profession plays in Nigeria’s economic development and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to addressing the housing crisis.

“Globally, the building and construction industry is essential for providing and maintaining infrastructure and serves as a leading indicator of economic growth. Nigeria is no exception,” Opaluwah stated. He highlighted that the significant housing deficit necessitates urgent intervention from all levels of government and professional bodies like CORBON.

He called for the establishment of a responsive social housing program to assist vulnerable groups, stressing the need to improve access to land and liberalize mortgage systems to empower youth toward homeownership.

At a separate event to induct 329 new members, Opaluwah urged the new professionals to uphold values of excellence and professionalism in their work. He also called on state governments to enact planning laws that would facilitate better urban development and housing solutions.

The pressing issue of housing in Nigeria continues to demand attention as the nation strives to achieve sustainable development and improve the living conditions of its citizens.
