The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has appointed Professor Okorie Austine Uche as its new Registrar. Professor Uche, a distinguished civil and structural engineering professor at Bayero University, succeeds Engr. Prof. Adisa Ademola Bello, whose tenure has concluded.
The appointment, effective March 2025, was confirmed by COREN’s Head of Corporate Advancement and Public Relations, Mrs. Ojonugwa Haruna, during the 183rd Ordinary Council Meeting held on January 15, 2025.
With an illustrious career spanning over three decades, Professor Uche has made significant contributions to engineering education, research, and administration in Nigeria. Born on August 1, 1965, in Amuda-Isuochi, Umunneochi local government area of Abia State, he began his academic journey at Development Primary School, Owerri, and continued through Isuochi Secondary School and Emmanuel College, Owerri.
He graduated with distinction in Agricultural Engineering from the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, in 1988, where he was valedictorian. He then obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Bayero University, Kano, in 1994, graduating as the best student. Professor Uche earned a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 2000, and completed his Doctorate in the same field there in 2008.
Since joining Bayero University in 2001, he has trained and mentored over 1,000 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate students, significantly influencing the future of engineering in Nigeria. His scholarly contributions include more than 90 publications in reputable journals and conferences. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (FNICE), a COREN-registered engineer, and a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the Materials Society of Nigeria, among other professional associations.
Professor Uche has held various leadership roles, including Chairman of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) for the Kano and Kabuga branches, and has actively participated in COREN Council committees since 2014. COREN is confident that his extensive knowledge, experience, and leadership will greatly benefit the role of Registrar.
