Axxela, an oil and gas company, has reiterated its commitment to adhering to global best practices, legal standards, and sustainable development as it navigates a land dispute with residents of Emu-Ebendo Community in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State.

This clarification comes in response to protests from members of the Emu-Ebendo community, who are demanding Axxela’s withdrawal from a section of land they claim was wrongfully acquired through another community. The demonstrators reference a Supreme Court judgment that purportedly grants them ownership of the land in question, which Axxela needs for its operational expansion.

In a statement provided by Omolara Shitu, Axxela’s Corporate Communications Manager, the company asserted that its land acquisition was legitimate and complied with all necessary legal procedures. “Our attention has been drawn to a community dispute concerning land acquired for a planned gas processing plant in Umuseti, Delta State,” the statement explained.

Axxela emphasized that the land acquisition followed a rigorous due diligence process in full alignment with the legal and regulatory frameworks. “This process involved extensive consultations with relevant family houses, engagement with authorities, and adherence to all statutory procedures governing such transactions,” the company noted.

The firm highlighted that it has a registered deed of assignment, which includes consent from the Governor, demonstrating its lawful purchase of the land.

Axxela expressed dedication to nurturing positive engagement and fostering peaceful coexistence with its host communities. “We place a high value on proactive and strategic engagement with our stakeholders,” the statement added. The company had extensive discussions with key community representatives, local leaders, and family representatives prior to the acquisition, aiming for transparency and mutual understanding.

“We are committed to resolving any perceived community issues through dialogue with anyone who may feel aggrieved in this matter,” Axxela maintained, urging against the spread of misinformation that could escalate tensions and misrepresent the company’s integrity.

The company reiterated its focus on fostering development and economic growth in the region, mentioning that the planned gas processing facility is a strategic investment expected to create jobs, bolster local businesses, and improve infrastructure development in the area.
