The district head of Gurdi in Abaji area council, Bala Mohammed, has appealed to the FCT Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello, to provide relief materials to flood victims in the community.
Mohammed, who spoke with our reporter on Saturday, said farmers were worst hit by the recent flood that submerged crops at the community.
He said majority of his subjects were peasant farmers and had lost all their crops to the flood, adding that the major crops planted at the river bank such as rice, maize, cassava and guinea corn had been submerged by the flood.
He said the flood, caused by torrential rainfall, also destroyed some mud houses in the community, adding that some of the affected people were forced to take refuge in neighbours’ houses.
“I am sure you are aware that Gurdi is among the villages that is into rice farming, but today, our rice, maize and guinea corn have been submerged by flood. We are likely going to face shortage of food this year and I want to appeal to the FCT minister to come to our aid,” he said. Daily Trust
