In a troubling revelation for Nigeria’s real estate sector, a recent audit has uncovered over 59,000 duplicate property listings among more than 100,000 analyzed. This alarming statistic highlights significant data integrity issues that could hinder market transparency and trust.

The analysis shows that nearly 60% of the listings were reposted by agents across various platforms, often to maintain visibility in a highly competitive market. Additionally, over 9,000 listings were found to lack identifiable agent information, making it nearly impossible for potential buyers to verify or follow up on the listings. Some properties were listed at extreme prices, indicating potential data entry errors or deliberate inflation to attract attention.

These findings underscore a critical need for improved data verification processes and accountability among agents in Nigeria’s property listing ecosystem. The prevalence of duplicate listings not only distorts market insights but also erodes trust among consumers and investors.

The real estate industry is already grappling with a significant housing deficit, estimated at around 28 million units.
