The Edo State government, under Governor Monday Okpebholo, has launched a significant agricultural initiative by earmarking 3,000 hectares of land for farming across the state’s three senatorial districts. The project began with the cultivation of 60 hectares (148 acres) in Iguoriakhi, located in the Ovia South West local government area, marking the first phase of the state’s back-to-farm campaign.
This initiative is aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes food sufficiency for Nigeria. During an inspection tour of the farm settlement led by Dr. Osagie Peter, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Governor Okpebholo expressed his commitment to replicating the farm settlement model in Edo Central and Edo North to ensure comprehensive food security.
Governor Okpebholo stated, “We have cleared large numbers of hectares of land and are ready to clear more. Our aim is to embrace agriculture as a means to grow and develop Edo’s economy. We are committed to feeding our people and supporting our farmers during this year’s farming season.”
Dr. Peter highlighted that about 250 farm heads will benefit from the first phase of the project, which includes a significant portion of the Iguoriakhi Farm Settlement dedicated to permanent crops like palm and rubber trees. The settlement, acquired in 1962, spans 2,350 hectares and aims to accommodate active farm heads, ensuring food security in Edo South and beyond.
This ambitious agricultural project marks a vital step towards enhancing food production in Edo State, fostering economic growth and sustainability in the region.
