EHCON Seek Media Attention In Climate Change Awareness Creation

The Registrar/CEO, Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON), Dr. Yakubu Baba Mohammed, recently while on a familiarisation visit to Daily Trust, a publication of Media Trust Limited at their headquarters in Abuja, urged the media in creating awareness on climate change and environmental health, in a way of assisting the Council.

The is in readiness as the Council is set to enforce public health laws.

“The Council is set to implement environmental health laws, the media is a senior partner in this area and we cannot do without you, mostly as it concerns awareness creation and Daily Trust is indeed doing well in this regard”, he said.

In a letter signed by the Director, Special Duties/Public Affairs of the Council, Mrs Jummai R Ahmed and made known to the Press, Friday, she disclosed that he Registrar, while on the visit, made it known that the Council has sufficient man power to ensure this enforcement is achieved down to the rural communities.  

He further stated that with over fifty thousand environmental health personnels who have been empowered by law, the environment can be adequately policed.

Dr Baba, while disclosing that, with the establishment of Environmental Health Reference Laboratory Centre, the Profession is ready to respond to any outbreak of disease.

He said the Council has achieved the task of migrating from analogue to digital method of environmental supervision.

“With the aid of this technology one personnel could be able to monitor about eight thousand population adequately”, he stated.

While expressing optimisim that the Council is capable of ridding off constant outbreak of cholera in the country, Dr. Baba also, expressed the need for rural dwellers to be sensitised on the use and need for more toilet facilities.

He further explained that with the advent of digitilising the profession, which is part of the rebranding agenda of the Council, it is mandatory for all practitioners to ensure they have area of specialisation.

“Henceforth, the renewal of 2024/2025 licence must be done by those who have undergone modular examination which would enable them choose their core area of specialisation”, he concluded.
