Women from Odo-Oro Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State staged a peaceful protest on Monday against Agbeyewa Farms, accusing the agricultural company of destroying their farmlands and ancestral economic trees.

The protesters, carrying placards, marched across the community, calling on President Bola Tinubu, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, Senator Cyril Fasuyi, and other leaders to intervene. They alleged that Agbeyewa Farms, a subsidiary of Cavista Holdings, was clearing their lands, which they described as vital to their heritage and survival.

Chief (Mrs) Adebomola Ogunsakin, the Eyelobinrin Ara of Odo-Oro Kingdom, speaking on behalf of the women, lamented the destruction of cocoa trees, palm trees, and other crops. “They are destroying what is left of what our forefathers gave to us. If this continues, how are we expected to survive?” she questioned.

Supporting the women, the Onise of Odo-Oro, Oba Babatunde Jemilehin, warned against the forceful takeover of community lands without proper consultation. While expressing support for genuine investments that promote economic growth, the traditional ruler criticized actions that, in his words, promote “food insecurity” rather than food security.

“My people have spoken and I stand with them. We will not continue to tolerate this injustice and inhumane behavior from any group or company,” the monarch declared.

In reaction to the protests, Mr. John Olajide, founder of Agbeyewa Farms, defended his firm’s activities, emphasizing a commitment to job creation, economic growth, and food security for Ekiti State. He acknowledged the community’s fears, blaming them on past experiences with unscrupulous investors.

“If there are misunderstandings, dialogue is important. Responsible investors must work with communities to ensure mutual benefits,” Olajide said, urging calm and cooperation.

The situation continues to draw attention as stakeholders weigh the impact of agricultural investments on local communities and heritage lands.
