The Uzo Uwani Local Government Council in Enugu State has begun the construction of rural roads to enhance access to schools and support local farming communities.
Chairman of the Council, Chukwudi Nnadozie, who flagged off the projects on Monday, said the initiative was part of efforts to improve education and boost economic activities in the area. Nnadozie emphasized that quality road infrastructure is critical to ensuring that students can attend school safely and that farmers can transport their produce with ease.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony at Umulokpa, Nnadozie explained that the council had prioritized connecting communities that were previously cut off during the rainy season due to poor road conditions. He noted that for many years, students and teachers faced challenges reaching schools because of inaccessible roads, often having to trek long distances through muddy and unsafe paths.
He stated that the projects, which are being executed through direct labor, would cover key feeder roads linking villages such as Adani, Abbi, and Umulokpa to major educational centers within the local government. According to him, once completed, the new roads will not only ease the burden on schoolchildren but also open up the rural economy to greater opportunities.
Community leaders and residents who attended the ceremony expressed gratitude to the council, describing the development as long overdue. They appealed to the state government to complement the council’s efforts by investing further in rural infrastructure, health facilities, and education.
Nnadozie assured the residents that the council remains committed to improving their standard of living through sustainable development projects. He pledged that the road construction will be completed before the start of the next academic session to allow students to benefit immediately.
The Enugu State government has in recent years emphasized rural development as a major policy focus, aligning with broader national efforts to bridge the urban-rural divide and ensure inclusive growth.
