The Federal Government has been urged by experts to implement policies that will facilitate Nigerians’ easy access to mortgages in order to promote growth in the housing sector.
Stakeholders asserted that having access to mortgages would help close the enormous housing shortfall in the nation and suggested that mortgage financing be taught as a subject at all of the nation’s higher education institutions.
This was the resolution of experts at the Institute of Mortgage Brokers and Lenders of Nigeria’s two-day National Conference on Mortgage in Abuja, recently.
The government was urged to provide inexpensive mortgage options that would meet the diverse demands of borrowers by Professor Suleiman Mohammed, the Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University Keffi, who was represented by Professor Andrew Zamani.
Reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks and promoting housing investment are two goals of streamlining government programmes, according to Mohammed. In addition to developing training courses, other industry players should work together in academics.
“Reforms should be implemented by regulatory authorities to establish a business-friendly, effective, and transparent regulatory environment. A very important component is having an inexpensive mortgage package that can meet the diverse demands of borrowers. Promoting moral behaviour among members is also essential for safeguarding customers and fostering industry trust.
The conference’s goal, according to the institute’s registrar, Dr. Jasper Adeleye, was to unite experts in the building sector and convey a strong message to quacks to leave the sector.
