A gas explosion caused a fire outbreak in the female hostel building of Yobe State University in Damaturu.
Tuesday night, about 7:00 p.m., a cooking gas cylinder inside the structure was alleged to have caused the fire outbreak.
Eight traumatized female students were reportedly admitted to the university’s clinic and the Damaturu specialty hospital, and no life was lost.
The state university’s administration confirmed the incident and stated that it took place in the university’s New Females Hostel A.
The statement by Abdulmumini Kolo Gulani, stated that state firefighters and the Yobe State University firefighters had contained the fire.
He added that all students had safely evacuated the building.
He said that the fire incident’s origin was still unknown and that the university’s vice chancellor, Prof. Mala Mohammed Daura, was collaborating with the security and fire departments to determine the reason of the mishap and devise a long-term solution.
State Governor Mai Mala Buni expressed sympathy to the administration and students as well.
In a statement, Governor Buni, through his Director General Press and Media Affairs, Mamman Muhammad, acknowledged the regrettable nature of the fire while expressing thanks that no lives were lost.
“We are still appreciative that nobody perished despite the massive fire that destroyed the hostel.
“While the government searches for alternative accommodations for the female students, SEMA is hereby directed to provide food, clothing, and beddings,” he said.
Governor Buni urged the state’s citizens and students to exercise caution and refrain from doing anything that may start a fire.
In order to prevent such incidents in the future, he stated that the government will investigate the immediate and distant source of the fire outbreak.
