Worried by the perennial flooding activities which had claimed about lives and destroyed many property in the nation’s capital, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCT), has flagged off the 2019 assessment of flood-prone areas in the six Area Councils in Abuja.
The Permanent Secretary, ( FCT), Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa who stated this in Ashara-Wako in Kwali Area Council in Abuja, noted that this was aimed at preventing further destruction of lives and property in the city.
According to him, “we will be educating residents on the dangers of building on flood prone areas.
Ohaa urged residents to desist from dumping refuse in drainage channels, farming on riverbanks and building on waterways.
The Permanent Secretary, who blamed the poor attitude of residents for the recurring flood incidents in parts of the city also condemned activities of estate developers who deliberately contravene provisions of the Master Plan to build houses on flood plains and natural courses and channels of rivers.
He called on traditional rulers and other stakeholders to support the various factions of the government in this regard and also educate their subjects.
It would be recalled that had said a permanent solution to the flooding menace in FCT is the removal of all illegal and/or encroaching structures erected on water courses in the area.
This development has substantially narrowed the right of way of the waterway and hence resulting in flooding of the area.
