The Uche Collins Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation, has called for increased public sensitisation on the proper use of pedestrian bridges in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), citing widespread neglect of the safety infrastructure.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the foundation’s president, Uche Collins Oyemere, noted that many of the pedestrian bridges are being ignored by residents, who often risk their lives crossing busy highways instead. He described the structures as being treated like “monumental decorations” rather than vital safety tools.

Oyemere called on well-meaning individuals, private organisations, and government bodies to partner with the foundation in promoting awareness and encouraging behavioral change among pedestrians.

The appeal comes amid rising concerns over pedestrian safety and repeated incidents of avoidable road fatalities due to non-use of footbridges across Nigeria’s urban centres.
