The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the procurement of a N2.5 billion satellite system to combat illegal mining activities in Nigeria. This announcement was made by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, during a press briefing after the FEC meeting on March 3, 2025.

Dr. Alake described the satellite technology as an integrated solution aimed at addressing unlicensed, unregulated, and underreported mining activities that have led to significant revenue leakages and illegal mineral exploitation. He explained that the satellite equipment will be strategically installed across the country to provide real-time monitoring of mining operations.

“We are procuring satellite gadgets that will allow us to visually track activities at various mining sites. At the click of a button, we can assess the volume of minerals extracted and the security situation in those areas,” he stated.

In addition to deploying satellite technology, the ministry is implementing a two-pronged strategy to tackle illegal mining. This includes a persuasive approach encouraging artisanal miners to form cooperatives, which allows them to operate legally and access financial resources. To date, over 300 cooperative societies have been established.

For those who do not comply, a coercive strategy is in place, exemplified by the establishment of Mining Marshalls who enforce regulations and have led to the arrest and prosecution of illegal operators, including foreigners.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to regulating the mining sector and ensuring it contributes positively to Nigeria’s economy.
