The Federal Government has officially commenced the construction of two bypasses on the 2nd Niger Bridge, linking the Asaba-Benin and Enugu-Onitsha dual carriageways. This announcement follows the release of 30% mobilization funds to the construction firms involved.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, shared this update during an inspection of ongoing federal road projects in Rivers State. He expressed optimism that the reconstruction of the East-West Road, which has suffered significant flood damage, will be completed by March 2026.
Umahi praised President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to infrastructure development, highlighting the timely release of funds for various projects, including the Abuja-Kano roadway. He commended the ongoing efforts in the Niger Delta and Anambra regions, noting that the construction of the 2nd Niger Bridge will be a major benefit for the entire country.
During his inspections, Umahi visited several key projects, including the Eleme-Onne road and the Bodo-Bonny major road, assuring the public of the government’s dedication to improving the region’s infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of raising local contractors to meet project demands efficiently.
Umahi also addressed the challenges posed by climate change, underlining the need for robust road designs to withstand flooding, which has previously caused significant disruptions to the East-West Road.
The minister concluded by reinforcing the administration’s commitment to enhancing the quality of infrastructure across Nigeria, ensuring that both local and foreign contractors deliver high standards of work.
