The Federal Government has commenced the demolition of illegal structures located beneath the Iddo Bridge in Lagos. This action follows the expiration of eviction notices issued to occupants living under the bridge, marking a significant step in addressing safety concerns in the area.
Engr. David Umahi, the Minister of Works, was present at the demolition site and emphasized the urgent need for this operation. He explained that years of unauthorized activities, including exposure to fire, have severely compromised the structural integrity of the bridge. The situation has become critical, prompting immediate governmental intervention.
During his address, Umahi stated, “We are currently at Iddo Bridge, where we have brought in a team of bridge experts. This structure has been subjected to significant damage due to the illegal activities of people living beneath it. They have constructed block walls and engaged in various commercial ventures, which have led to the bridge being damaged extensively.”
The Minister revealed that engineers had assessed the situation and warned that the Iddo Bridge is on the verge of collapse. Due to this alarming finding, a decision was made to demolish the existing structures and execute a comprehensive reconstruction of the bridge. Umahi noted, “Our engineers have indicated that this bridge cannot be repaired in its current state and must be completely rebuilt for the safety of all.”
He also pointed out that illegal occupants have turned the area into makeshift warehouses, shops, and living spaces. This illegal occupation not only violates regulations but also poses a grave risk to the lives of residents in Lagos. “What is being sold here is not more important than the lives of Lagosians. It is illegal for anyone to occupy this space under the bridge,” Umahi asserted.
The Minister stressed that prioritizing the safety of the public was paramount and that the government would not tolerate actions that jeopardize lives. He reiterated the need for the illegal occupants to vacate the area promptly to allow for a thorough examination of the bridge’s facilities and ensure the protection of the community.
