The Federal Government has announced that it is delivering roads across Nigeria designed to last between 50 and 100 years. Works Minister Engr. Dave Umahi made this declaration during an inspection of the ongoing rehabilitation of the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Expressway.
Umahi emphasized that modern construction methods and materials are being employed to ensure road longevity and sustainability under varying climatic and traffic conditions. He stated, “You cannot achieve a better California Bearing Ratio (CBR) by simply bringing laterite on the road.”
The minister praised the contractor, Infiouest International Limited, for their work, highlighting that the project design is among the most advanced in the country. He explained that the engineering methods used will guarantee lasting results, stating that potholes will be treated comprehensively rather than just patched.
He reiterated the importance of proper milling and concrete reinforcement to extend the lifespan of roads, noting that the design now prioritizes rigid pavements for major highways. Umahi advised against unnecessary replacements of structurally sound materials, stressing the need for adherence to international best practices.
The Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammed Goronyo, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving road infrastructure, commending Umahi for his dedication and hands-on approach. The project has deployed around 300 units of equipment to ensure timely and quality delivery.
