The Federal Government has announced an increase in housing loan ceilings for civil servants, allowing permanent secretaries to access loans of up to N25 million. This decision aims to enhance the welfare of federal workers and is detailed in a memo from the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack.
Under the new guidelines, officers on Grade Level 8 can now receive up to N8 million, while those on Level 17 can obtain N14 million, and Levels 15 and 16 can access up to N12 million. The revised structure represents a significant increase from the previous maximum loan of N15 million for top-ranking civil servants.
The memo, which was sent to various government officials, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of its workforce through better access to housing loans. The loans are to be repaid over a period of up to 25 years, with specific provisions for retirees.
Tommy Etim, a former National President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, praised the loan ceiling increase, noting that it had been a long-overdue adjustment. He highlighted the importance of aligning loan access with civil servants’ annual incomes, making it a more equitable system.
This initiative reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to support its workforce amidst various economic challenges.
