The Federal Government has announced a significant reduction in the number of properties slated for demolition to facilitate the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project. During a stakeholders’ meeting, Lagos State Controller of Works, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, revealed that only 700 properties will be affected, down from earlier estimates of 1,500.

Kesha highlighted the economic considerations behind this decision, stating, “We took the most economical route.” She praised the project’s planning and pace, noting that Section 1 of the highway, spanning over 47 kilometers, had already been awarded.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, emphasized the project’s transformative potential for Nigeria’s transport infrastructure, which will not only ease traffic congestion but also integrate multi-modal transport options. He noted that the eco-friendly design will generate carbon credits, contributing to a more sustainable future.

Umahi addressed challenges related to existing industrial infrastructure, particularly concerning the Dangote refinery, and outlined plans for flyovers to accommodate heavy truck traffic. He also mentioned ongoing and planned projects across various states, reinforcing the government’s commitment to improving national infrastructure.

The minister reiterated the importance of avoiding misuse of the infrastructure being developed, ensuring that the benefits of these projects are maximized for the nation.
