The Federal Government has temporarily shut down the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja, with the facility not expected to reopen until sometime in 2026. The decision comes amidst internal crises at the club and plans for a comprehensive upgrade of its facilities.

Security agencies including the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) have maintained a presence at the premises since April 26, when the club was indefinitely closed to prevent further unrest related to a disputed Board of Trustees appointment.

Sources indicate the closure will allow for full-scale renovations aimed at transforming the club into a world-class facility. The upgrade is to be handled by Julius Berger, the original designers of the course in 1991, and jointly funded by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, the Federal Ministry of Works, and the National Sports Commission.

Members have been asked by the Interim Management Committee, led by Peter Deshi, to remove all personal belongings from the club’s locker rooms due to the renovation work. Access to the premises has been restricted to essential staff and verified individuals.

Further reports suggest that the committee is considering a re-screening of all members ahead of the eventual reopening, in a move likely intended to resolve internal governance and membership concerns.

The crisis reportedly began in March 2025 during a disrupted emergency meeting aimed at adopting a new constitution for the club’s Board of Trustees. Tensions escalated when the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, appointed Justice Monica Dongban Mensem, President of the Appeal Court, as chair of the new board, an action currently being challenged in court by some members.

The IBB Golf Club remains one of Nigeria’s most prestigious golf courses, and stakeholders are hopeful that the renovation and administrative restructuring will restore its status and integrity upon reopening.
