The federal government has initiated measures to tackle challenges hindering access to safe water and sanitation in Nigeria by launching the inaugural annual water quality conference. Held under the theme “Safe Water for Sustainable Public Health,” the conference aims to bring together key stakeholders to address pressing issues related to water quality management and develop actionable strategies to ensure safe water access for all citizens.

During the event, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, emphasized the critical role of water quality in national development, public health, and environmental sustainability. He cited the Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene National Outcomes Routine Monitoring Report of 2021, revealing that boreholes and tube wells serve as the primary water sources for 37% of households, while only 11% rely on pipe-borne water. Alarmingly, 25% of the population still depends on unimproved and surface water sources.

Utsev also highlighted the ongoing sanitation crisis, noting that access to safely managed sanitation facilities is still low and that open defecation remains a significant issue in the country. Despite these challenges, he assured that the ministry is leveraging modern technologies and collaborating with both local and international partners to implement innovative solutions to improve water quality.

The conference marks a significant step towards addressing Nigeria’s water supply and sanitation challenges, with hopes of securing safe water for all citizens in the near future.
