Fire destroys 30 shops in Kwara

Fire has gutted 30 shops at Oro in Irepodun Local Government of Kwara State.

It was gathered that the inferno occurred around 3pm on Monday at Oro Central Market, which contains 354 shops.

The fire was reportedly caused by careless burning of refuse by a yet-to-be-identified person.

Spokesperson for the state Fire Service Hassan Adekunle confirmed the incident.

He said: “Although the conflagration was huge, our firemen put out the ravaging inferno.

“Out of the 354 shops at the market, 30 shops were consumed by fire. Others were rescued by the firemen.

“According to our officers on the scene, the fire occurred due to careless refuse burning by an unknown person. It later spread to a shop and thereafter to other shops in the area.”

Adekunle advised people to be alive to their “fire safety responsibility, in order to reduce fire outbreaks.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq visited the victims and inspected scene of the incident.
