Following the fire that destroyed several stores in the early hours of Wednesday, traders along 108 Zik’s Avenue, next to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, close to Eke Awka Market in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, have begun to count their losses.
According to information obtained by Viewpoint Housing News, the fire damaged a portion of the market that had several stores selling goods valued at millions of naira.
At the time of writing this report, the exact source of the fire was still unknown, however some people thought it might have been caused by a power surge, while others weren’t convinced .
An unnamed eyewitness in the vicinity stated that the fire originated from one of the stores and that locals Observed intense flames as it spread, to other parts.
The Anambra State Fire Service chief, Chukwudi Chiketa, who confirmed the incident, said fire
fighters were deployed immediately to the scene of the incident and they battled to contain the fire.
He said, “The Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call at 01:26 hours of today, about a raging fire at the lock-up shops along 108 Zik’s Avenue, beside St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Awka.
“The Anambra firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene of the fire, they fought and contained the fire. About two shops were affected.
“The firemen were able to put off the fire and prevented it from escalating to other shops, including a nearby PMS and kerosene substation and other neighbouring structures.
“As of the time of this update, the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained. But no life was lost.
“The firefighters left the scene at 04:01 hours and returned to the station at 04:21 hours. Remember, Fire kills but, you can prevent it. Be safety conscious.”
