A wave of panic swept through the Ifako-Ijaiye area of Lagos on Thursday following a fire outbreak at the General Hospital located along College Road.
Eyewitnesses and social media users raised the alarm after flames and thick smoke were seen engulfing parts of the hospital’s three-storey building. The disturbing incident was captured in a video posted by a Facebook user, Modinat Melemuku, who appealed for help, writing: “Happening now at General Hospital Ifako-Ijaiye, College Road. Please repost. Help is needed.”
Shortly after the alert, firefighters were seen arriving at the scene to battle the inferno as concerned residents and onlookers watched in fear.
Reports on the ground expressed serious concern that some patients — including nursing mothers and their babies — might have been trapped inside during the blaze. However, as of the time this report was filed, there were no confirmed casualties.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and efforts are ongoing to assess the damage and determine whether lives or critical hospital services were affected.
