An early morning fire outbreak has destroyed properties and goods worth millions of naira in Amarata Community, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The fire, which broke out at 2.30 a.m. on Saturday, was claimed to have begun from a spark when a vehicle carrying illegally refined fuel exploded while attempting to discharge the cargo at a fueling station near the residential neighbourhood.
Both victims and eyewitnesses informed reporters that the fuel that poured from the truck burned down a portion of the filling station and overflowed into several nearby buildings and stores, destroying people’s property and belongings.
A victim, Ebiomo Queen, who operates a mini-supermarket in the vicinity, claimed the fire destroyed items and cash worth around N20 million inside her shop after operations closed the previous night.
Yet another victim, Mr Theophilus Joseph Otti, claims that security guards from the neighbouring Kimiowei filling station sounded the alert, and when he awoke, the fire was already burning.
Another victim, Chinyere Eze, whose home and goods were damaged by the fire, said he couldn’t take anything since they were attempting to preserve lives rather than property.
ASP Musa Muhammed, the police spokesman for Bayelsa State, confirmed the incident.
