A fire which broke out in the Lafenwa Market in Abeokuta, Ogun State, destroyed at least ten shops.
The Lafenwa Market’s Iyaloja, Muinatu Akinfenwa, was one among the witnesses and said that the fire started in a dump site behind the shops.
Muinatu, who bemoaned the inappropriate placement of waste behind the market, applauded the local government chairman, the DPO of Lafenwa, and other agencies for their prompt action in putting out the fire. These agencies included the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Amotekun, TRACE, and market ladies.
Ola Oresanya, the state’s commissioner for the environment, visited the area on behalf of the governor, expressing condolences to the injured market women and promising prompt government involvement, saying The governor was saddened by the tragedy.
Oresanya emphasised the dangers of indiscriminate refuse burning during harmattan, declaring the said dumpsite illegal.
He assured that the state government, in collaboration with local authorities, would construct additional stalls to discourage roadside displays.
