Fire razed six houses and four shops on Eyo Edem Street near Watt market in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State in the early hours of Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out around 2:30 am on Tuesday. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.
One of the eyewitnesses, Enoh Edet, told our correspondent that an electrical surge that occurred overnight could have caused the outbreak. He added that no life was lost. A victim of the incident, Mr. Enobong Moses, lamented that the State Fire Service “could not do much because of the epileptic equipment they were using.”
The Fire Service Public Relations Officer Cletus Makpere, who confirmed the incident, told journalists that “Our men were there and they were able to bring the fire under control. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Our men have gone to the scene to carry out post-fire inspection to ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak.
“We have not done the cost of the property burnt. We expect our men to come back with the report. It is after that we will know what was burnt.” Punch
