The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) marked the 2024 Anti-Corruption Day by reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability, aligning with the leadership values of Managing Director/Chief Executive, Shehu Usman Osidi. The Bank patnered with the Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) and the Federal Ministry of Justice for a significant event held at the Federal Ministry of Finance Auditorium.
The theme for this year’s observance, “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity Using the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2011 as a Tool,” highlighted the essential role of young people in promoting integrity and accountability. The event aimed to harness the potential of the FOIA as a powerful instrument in the fight against corruption.
Mrs. Virginia Jang, FMBN’s Group Head of Corporate Communications, participated in the event, represented by Jadesola Gbago, Unit Head of Public Affairs and Events Management.
In a keynote address delivered by Barr. Godwin Garba, representing Chief Lateef Fagbemi, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, the necessity for increased awareness and proper implementation of the FOIA was emphasized. Garba reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the Act is fully operational, signifying its importance in the ongoing battle against corruption.
Comrade Ayodele Olawande Wisdom, Minister of Youth Development, represented by Comrade Dotun Omoleye, stressed the need to integrate transparency into the cultural fabric of Nigeria. He called on young Nigerians to actively participate in the fight against corruption, emphasizing that a future built on integrity is achievable through their involvement.
Ms. Faith Nwadishi, Executive Director of CTA, opened the event by discussing the significance of collaboration in combating corruption. She urged for a nationwide embrace of the FOIA and called for state governments to take steps toward domesticating the law, thereby empowering citizens.
A detailed review of the FOIA was presented by a representative from the Ministry of Justice, who covered its 32 sections, including its origins, objectives, timeline, and exemptions. This presentation aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of the Act and its practical applications.
A notable highlight of the event was the call for all government institutions to establish FOIA Desks staffed by a minimum of five officers. These desks will be responsible for the continuous updating of reporting templates and timely submissions to the Ministry of Justice by February 1 each year.
Under its current leadership, FMBN continues to integrate principles of transparency and accountability into its operations. The Bank remains a vital player in the national and global fight against corruption, reinforcing its commitment to fostering a culture of integrity.
