Homes damaged after Indonesian quake

No fewer than 48 people were injured and almost 350 houses damaged after a magnitude-5.6 earthquake hit Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Thursday.

According to the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency, the quake struck at 6:25 am (23:27 GMT Wednesday) with the epicentre 38 kilometres north-east of Pasaman, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

“South Solok district in West Sumatra province was the worst hit, with schools, places of worships and health clinics also damaged.

“Police, soldiers and officials are working to provide emergency relief to those affected,’’ National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Nugroho said.
