Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has begun investigations to unravel cause(s) of the collapse of a shopping complex under construction in Abuja on Friday, Coordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) Umar Shuaibu has disclosed.

The incident resulted in one death and six persons wounded.

The coordinator who spoke to journalists in Abuja, shortly after touring the site of the collapsed building said the FCTA and security men worked overnight with floodlights and equipment to clear the rubble, while referring the injured to hospital.

Shuaibu said, “We were here very promptly to address the matter and all the stakeholders, those that we invited and those that we did not even invite, they came here because people’s lives are involved.

“We were able to pull out everything and we made sure that there is no single person that is buried under the rubble. We combed everywhere.”

The coordinator said the council will now move into the next phase of clearing the rubble after which it will begin investigations into why the building collapsed.

He said, “When you have this type of emergency, the first thing you concentrate on is saving people’s lives and I assure you that nothing is going to be hidden from you.

“We are going to commence our investigations now and where there is any lapse, you are going to be informed and we’re going to take adequate measures in order to prevent future occurrence.”

Shuaibu however advised the general public to stay away from the site of the collapsed building, warning that security agencies have been instructed to arrest those who flout this order.

He described the place as emergency area, cordoned off to enable the council clear the rubble and handle issues.

On whether the building actually passed integrity test after about 15 years of being abandoned, he said that is an aspect that the council will now delve into.
