Bugged by the persistent gridlock on their spot of the Kubwa road, residents of Katampe/Jahi area of Abuja have called on the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to construct an over-head bridge to ameliorate the situation.

Some of the residents, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Tuesday in Abuja, expressed displeasure at the number of hours pedestrians waste on the spot.

“Pedestrians are worst hit by the lack of the over-head bridge; they wait for hours before crossing to the other side.

“Very often, some of them get killed by speeding vehicles. The situation gets worse everyday and we certainly cannot continue like this,” a pedestrian, Mr Oscar Oni, told NAN.

Another pedestrian, who described himself as a “businessman”, regretted the inconvenience caused by the lack of an over-head bridge, saying that pedestrians are forced to wait for hours.

“I cross this very bad road everyday to my place of work and back; I always have to wait for long before crossing to be sure that no vehicle is coming,’’ he said.

Another pedestrian, Miss Ijeoma Sule, a hair stylist said that she had to wait for long to cross the busy road.

“I have to wait for the vehicles to reduce before I cross so as not to be knocked down by an oncoming vehicle,’’ she said.

Sule expressed worry over the situation which, he said, usually becomes more hectic and worrisome at the peak hours of mornings and evenings when people go to work, or return.

“It is a serious situation. Government must do something about this urgently,” he said. NAN
