The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has presented the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency. The forecast indicates that many southern states will experience early rainfall, with significant rains expected at the beginning of the year.
Keyamo announced the predictions during a briefing in Abuja, highlighting that while early rainfall is anticipated in southern states like Delta and Rivers, northern and central states may see a delayed onset.
Key highlights from the forecast include:
- Early Rainfall: Southern states are expected to receive rain earlier than usual, while northern regions such as Plateau and parts of Kaduna may face delays.
- Dry Spells: A severe dry spell lasting up to 21 days is predicted for parts of northern Nigeria during the June-July-August season.
- August Break: The “little dry season” known as the August break will begin in late July, with severe conditions expected in Lagos and Ogun states.
The SCP serves as an early warning tool for stakeholders and communities, emphasizing the need for preparedness against potential weather-related hazards. The ministry aims to ensure that climate information is accessible to all Nigerians, fostering public engagement and awareness.
