The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed that the fire that ravaged the upper floor of a one-storey building on Agidi Road in the Alapere area was caused by an electrical power surge. The incident occurred on March 23, 2025, at approximately 8:55 a.m.
According to Damilola Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, the fire originated from a kitchen in one of the self-contained apartments and spread rapidly, causing significant damage to the affected unit and adjacent apartments on the upper floor. Fortunately, the ground floor remained unaffected.
Upon arrival, LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team found the upper floor engulfed in flames. The agency’s response team, along with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, successfully contained and extinguished the fire before it could spread further. No casualties or fatalities were reported.
The affected apartments sustained considerable structural and material losses, and precautionary measures were implemented to prevent any further incidents. A search-and-rescue operation was conducted to ensure that no individuals were trapped in the building.
This incident highlights the critical importance of electrical safety and the need for regular maintenance to prevent such occurrences in the future.
