The Lagos State government has commenced the demolition of 39 marked structures in Ikota Estate, located in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area. This action follows the expiration of a quit notice issued to property owners who violated drainage setback standards, contributing to ongoing flooding issues in the area.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, led the enforcement team and expressed concern over encroachments on waterways. He emphasized the need for residents to avoid activities that threaten the environment.
Wahab also addressed rumors regarding alleged demands for payments from property owners to halt demolitions, stating that the government is committed to halting illegal constructions and prosecuting those responsible. He noted that while complete prevention of flooding in a coastal state like Lagos is challenging, the government is investing in infrastructure to mitigate its effects.
In related developments, Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced that the Green Line Rail project, connecting Marina to Epe, is expected to commence in December. He also highlighted the need to enforce compliance against illegal structures on wetlands, ensuring the protection of the environment while advancing transport development.
